Carey Winston Pettus, 66, passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010 in Fort Worth. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

Carey was born on June 19, 1943 in Graham to Maurine Davidson Pettus and the late Winston Pettus. He married Sherry Davison on June 26, 1965 in Graham. He graduated from Graham High School and was a graduate of Gupton Jones School of Mortuary Science, Abilene Christian University, and Texas Tech. Carey was a rancher following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He was in law enforcement for 30 years in Irving, Carrollton, and Graham. He served as the first juvenile officer in Carrollton and concluded his career there as assistant to the Chief of Police. Carey served as the Young County Sheriff for 15 years. Under his leadership he was extremely involved in the Child Advocacy Center, the Inmate Work Program, the Cross Timbers Task Force and other programs for our community. He served as President of Graham Country Club, President of Young County Humane Society, a member of the Maskat Shrine Temple in Wichita Falls and a member the Masonic Lodge of Loving and Graham. He was a gifted artist and recently held a one man show at Bellaford Gallery where his paintings and drawings delighted those attending. His delight was his family, doting on his daughter Heather and granddaughter Maddie. Those who knew and loved him will miss his fine wit and generous nature.

Survivors include: wife, Sherry Pettus of Graham; daughter, Heather Lindley and husband, Kary of Graham; mother, Maurine Pettus of Graham; brothers, Kent Pettus and wife, Nancy of Graham and Sherrill Pettus and wife, Ana of Graham; granddaughter, Madelyn Lindley of Graham.

Memorials may be made to Young County Humane Society.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
