Jeanette (DJ) Cannon

March 13, 1936 — December 30, 2023

Jeanette (DJ) Cannon

Jeanette Elaine Adams Cannon (DJ) left her earthly home on Saturday, December 30, 2023.  Mrs. Cannon was born in Madison, Nebraska on March 13, 1936 to the late Lewis & Helen Adams.  Mrs. Cannon was 87 years old.  She married Bobby Gene Cannon of Collinsville Texas on June 1, 1957.  He preceded her in death in July of 2016.   Mrs. Cannon held a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Texas and a Masters degree in Library Science from Texas Women’s University.  Mrs. Cannon completed the bachelor degree in 2 years so that she could become an elementary teacher.  She taught elementary school in Perrin and became the school’s first dedicated Librarian.  Her husband was the school superintendent and every holiday season Mrs. Cannon would make individual banana nut loaves for the staff along with peanut brittle, fudge, and other holiday candy.

The Cannons attended First Baptist Church in Perrin and Mrs. Cannon taught Sunday School and served on the hospitality committee.  For years Mrs. Cannon and the ladies of the church would decorate and prepare meals for funerals, baby showers, and wedding showers.  Mrs. Cannon’s gift of service could be seen in many things in the church and Perrin community.

Hanging in her apartment at Elison of Graham was the quote “Family is my Anchor” and Mrs. Cannon believed and lived that sentiment. Jeanette was the 7th child with three older brothers and three older sisters and one younger sister.  In 1964 she along with Bob picked up Cheryl Danice from Hope Cottage and in 1969 the three of them brought home Christopher Derek from the Edna Gladney Home. Her anchor became stronger when her 3 grandsons were born – Lance Cannon Groves, William Corey Groves, and Casey Bailey Cannon.  It is Lance who gave her the name DJ.

These last years were spent loving the great grandchildren - Kain, Kambrey, Cannon, and Winnie.  DJ loved reading to them, walking around Elison faster than them, and hearing about their life adventures.  The anchor was strong and held firm.

DJ is preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents, and her brothers Donald, John, and Dale Adams.

DJ’s living anchor includes her daughter – Dr. Cheryl and husband Kerry Groves of Graham and her son - Chris Cannon of Henrietta.  Her grandsons – Lance Groves and his wife Amanda of Graham, Corey Groves of Graham, Casey Cannon and his wife Makenzie of Weatherford and her great grandchildren Kain Simental, Kambrey Groves, Cannon Groves, and Winnie Groves all of Graham.  Jeanette’s three older sisters – Catherine Jaton of Farmers Branch, Eleanor Clark of Mims Florida, Dr. Mary Canuteson of Dallas, and younger sister, Gloria Copeland of Dallas.  Sister in law and brother in law Helen and Butch Jetzelsberger of Haltom City, brother in law Billy Bob Johnson of Collinsville, and so many nieces and nephews.

DJ loved her time at Elison of Graham and her family is grateful for the care she received since 2014.  She made many new friends and she was especially close to the director – Trachelle Lewelling.  DJ also enjoyed challenging Kevin Miracle, her physical therapist, of Young County Home Health.  Beyond Faith Hospice provided her final support.

Visitation will be Wednesday, January 3, 2024 from 5-6pm at Morrison Funeral Home in Graham, Texas.  Graveside services will be Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 1:00pm at the Collinsville Cemetery in Collinsville Texas.

In memory of DJ – the family requests that we read books!  A book given to a public or school library would be the best way to honor and remember DJ’s life well lived.
