John Vera Alvarez, 89, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2026 at his home in Graham. Funeral service will be held Monday, October 26, 2026 at 11 a.m. in Morrison Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Pioneer Cemetery.
John was born March 8, 1937 in Karnes County to the late Luisa Noyola Vera and Rosalio Gonzales Alvarez. He married Frances Garcia December 14, 1958 in Colorado City. He was a devoted husband, loving Dad, and proud Papa who found his greatest joy in the simple things in life, especially time spent with family. A hardworking man who was never one to sit still, he could often be found outside tending to his yard, growing beautiful flowers, watching the birds, or finding another project to keep himself busy. He enjoyed riding bikes, fishing, watching old Westerns, cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, and spending time around the table playing games and working puzzles with family. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. He rarely missed a game and was always their biggest fan. But above all, he was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a way of bringing laughter and fun to every family gathering. He loved making us laugh, and we loved nothing more than making him laugh in return. His greatest legacy will always be the family he loved so dearly and the countless happy memories he leaves behind.
Survivors include: wife, Frances Alvarez of Graham; daughters, Sylvia Shewmake and husband, Joey of Graham, Peggy Hannah and husband, Eldon of Graham, Cindy Saunders of Ennis, and Lisa Blair and husband, E.C. of Graham; 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Alvarez, grandson, Kenneth Saunders, and great grandson, Braeden Pinkston.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home Chapel.
